When we build a home, window wells may not be the leading priority when it comes to having things done at home. But making sure you have parts to help trap, prevent water from coming in, installing a subfloor and insulating walls, it is one of those things you need to do before you can install better things at home. We have to understand basements shouldn’t have windows. There are these things called day-light basements. Some basements are just pushed against the earth. You can have windows in some day-light basements, and you may not need to have wells installed.
Some basements, however, may be pushed deep underground, give or take a foot or two. Exterior digging is needed in order to have a window installed. The well is the opening so you can let the light in and some air too. You just can build a well, you need to know the specific dimensions to use it as a means to escape. When you dig the earth to install a well, you need to support it to prevent the earth from collapsing. Generally, wells are generally semi-circular galvanized steel or polyethelene shields attached to the side. The whole thing is designed to support the earth at the same time keep some debris out from getting into the basement.
Leaves, dirt, water and snow are just some of the things that can get into the basement. We need to keep the basement protected from the elements and other objects. Of course, windows can be weather resistant but not totally. Basement egress windows also need to be protected from other elements such as storms and what not. Having wells and covers can help provide the right protection. It gives extra protection especially the area can get a lot of battering.
The window well covers can be plastic and cost anywhere from $50 to under $100. Covers attach to an existing well. Covers can also a way to help save a lot on power and heating said a lot of experts. Most basement windows lack the ability in keeping in the heat or cold. The basements may have the tendency to push things to lower temperatures. Covers should be able to prevent basement windows from getting exposed from dripping waters from roofs and from the ground water intrusion. And this is the reason why it may deteriorate quickly.
Make sure your laws require you to have wells and covers. It is important to know how big the egress, but you need to know the right sizes. Here is a video to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYU_53IYYV8.
